BIRTH MATTERS – I came across this short video which I thought I would share here. It basically sums up my sentiments on childbirth and why I started this website. The knowledge and information is out there for you to take – take it! If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any. Hope you enjoy it!

REDUCING INFANT MORTALITY – This new short film is the work of Debby Takikawa, the film maker of the award winning What Babies Want. I was introduced to the latter through my hypnobirthing training and found it a gentle affirmation of my perspective on birth. Oh, it is also narrated by Noah Wyle – added bonus!

Reducing Infant Mortality is a nice introduction for anyone considering the natural approach to childbirth and parenting. Discussing subjects such as the increasing cesarean section rate, the midwifery model of care, interventions in childbirth, bonding and breast feeding, I have dubbed this film ‘the little business of being born’. A good starter film for those of us questioning the socially accepted hospitalized birthing process that has become normal today.

THE VIDEO THAT INSPIRED ME TO TRY HYPNOBIRTHING – At the beginning of my pregnancy, I decided that I would like to try hypnobirthing to help me handle natural childbirth. There are many videos out there in cyberspace, but I though I’d share this one here. This woman is amazing, centered and calm, strong and aware, this is what I wanted for my birth. This is what I want for EVERYONE’S birth! Hope you enjoy it.

MONTY PYTHON BIRTH VIDEO – Here ya go. A parody birth video from those crazy British guys. A great depiction of standard hospital birth! Clips of this video can be seen in The Business of Being Born. Here is the full version which ‘delivers’ even more ridiculousness.

Laugh or cry? I don’t know! It seems that care hasn’t developed much in 26 years since this was made.

My favorite parts – “Mind the machines” and “…a totally irrational feeling of depression…”. Love that. Enjoy people!

THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN TRAILER – If you have already delved into the world of natural birth, you have probably heard of a little film called “The Business of Being Born”, directed by Abby Epstein and executively produced by Ricki Lake.

Conceived by Ricki following the birth of her two sons, the film sets out to de-stigmatize home birth and bring to light the fact that there are options other than the hospital available to women and families.

Personally, this film solidified my choice for home birth. I watched it around my seventh month of pregnancy and therefore had seven months of my own research as a base. The business of being born, for me, simply condensed all the information I had discovered on my own into a beautiful 85 minute production. Smart, simple and informative, it covers American maternity care both historical and current, has interviews with many of the natural birth advocates of today including Ina May Gaskin, Marsden Wagner, Dr Michael Odent and presents statistical information regarding childbirth today. But more than this, it follows families and midwives throughout their personal birth experiences, including Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein.

I highly recommend this film to anyone considering natural childbirth and home birth. It is a great eye opener for those of you just starting out, but remember to do your own research too.

The Business of Being Born

Ricki and Abby have also released a book called Your Best Birth, which focuses on making women aware of their options and invites them to take back their birthing experiences.

www.mybestbirth.com also features celebrity interviews from Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Mellissa Joan Hart among others who all chose natural childbirth. Finally, women are speaking out and letting other women out there know that there is another way.
