Morning all…
So, I was browsing the other Mom Blogs and found this video from Momversation about children and gun play.
It sparked off my neurons and retrieved a couple of memories from my childhood which I will share here. Mum…remember any of these?
When I was about 5 years old I remember being at school and it was play time. My Mum was there for some reason, maybe she had just dropped me off or it was my first day or something, and I was playing with these things called “sticklebricks” (think lego). I put two of these things together and made a gun shape. I don’t remember what my Mum said to me but I remember not playing with sticklebricks again.
I also have a vague memory of being a little older and dressing up as a cowboy/girl for a party or event. A plastic toy gun set was purchased (I assume by one of my parents) and there was a lot of debate and discussion as to whether I should be allowed to play with them. I think they were thrown away…
Remember, this was in England over 20 years ago.
We now live in Texas in 2009 with my 4 month old daughter. America. Texas. 2009.
Hunting is a way of life, there are no less than 6 guns in this house, my husband owns a gun, hunting parafinalia is everywhere.
I’m not going to debate hunting or the right to bear arms or anything, that is way beyond this post. But if I decide to take the same approach with my daughter as my parents did with me…what chance do I stand?
Anyway, here’s the video…enjoy
