Whilst I was pregnant, I started reading the blogs and forums on all things parenting. One of the recurring themes on these sites were the crunchies, the earthsavers, the green minded. They had a baby and suddenly felt this urgent desire to turn their lives around and dedicate it to saving the planet on which they lived. They were everywhere, making us childless ones feel guilty with our frivolous lifestyles and ever growing garbage…ugh. They used to make me sick. Until I became one.
Yes, they got me.
I hated it…HATED IT when I read something like “until you have a child, you don’t realize how selfishly you’re living”, or “when our baby came along, I realized that it was my responsibilty to make this world a better place for her…”. Etc. YUCK.
But…oh, but…it’s true.
We are currently in a housing transition, so it’s a little difficult to implement my newly generated green plan, but as soon as we get our new house I will be a Gung Ho Green Mamma!
I ordered my cloth diapers yesterday from Kelly’s Closet (can NOT wait until they come!), I already make my own wipes, I am going to have specific bins for the recyclables, and I will be line drying our clothes. I’m new at this, I will have to find other ways to become a true environmentalist (without becoming one of those unbearables!).
But I am still not crunchy! I will still be quite happy to be driven around in my husband’s SUV and use disposable razors.
Life is all about balance.
Let’s hope I don’t lose mine.
